The Origin

Established in the 17th century, Domaine de Papolle has a deep history and has used traditional methods to craft eau-de-vie through generations. Papolle’s 135 hectare grounds are surrounded by forest and lakes, with a 53 hectare vineyard, but only 2 hectare of vines used to distil Armagnac means a limited annual output.

This Bas Armagnac was distilled in 1978 using Baco grape exclusively, and matured for 44 long years under the expert eye of master distiller and cellar master, Bernard Piffard. The end result, a classical masterpiece of an Armagnac.

Baco is a hybrid created by Francois Baco the 1890s, following phylloxera. A cross of Folle Blanche and Noah grapes, it is well adapted to the sandy soils of the Bas-Armagnac that produce a fruity, delicate and highly revered eau de vie with great aging potential.

Phylloxera is an insect and pest for grapevines. In the 1960s the phylloxera plague began in France which destroyed most of the vineyards.
